How do I clean the non-removable lining of my helmet?
For best results clean the non-removable inner lining with lukewarm water and a mild shampoo; use a sponge or cloth to dampen the lining, taking care not to wet it too much. When drying, be careful the helmet doesn't get too hot as this can damage the interior EPS lining. Let dry at room temperature, never near stoves or other heating appliances as too high a temperature will damage the inner liner material and inner shell.
How do I clean the covers on my removable liner?
Hand wash, dampen with a towel and then air dry is a great way of keep your lining clean and fresh.
How do I clean my visor?
All Arai visors have a very strong anti-scratch coating to extend the useable life of the shield. The polycarbonate material used to manufacture the shield is very strong and durable, but is not shatterproof or impervious to damage. Products such as brake fluid, degreaser, gasoline and even gasoline fumes can quickly, easily, and often invisibly weaken the visor. Take great care not to expose your shield to any chemicals. Visor cleaning should be done only with warm water and a micro fiber cloth. Laying a microfiber cloth, soaked in warm water, across the shield will soften the bug debris and make cleaning easier. Once cleaned, protecting the visor surfaces with car wax (not polish!) will not only help bead rain water but reduce the amount of dirt build up as well.
What’s the best way to store my helmet?
Your helmet should be preferably cleaned using water and mild soap, thoroughly air dried and then stored in the original blue or grey cloth helmet bag. Always store in a well vented, dry environment away from strong chemicals and fuel.
What is the use of the silicon fluid packed in the helmet box?
This is a lubricant for plastic parts as used in the visor hinge system. The silicon fluid is also used for maintenance of the eye-opening trim rubber to keep it smooth. Please use very sparingly and refer to the instructions in the manual. DO NOT use any other parts (especially the visor) then those mentioned in the manual.
What to do when raindrops or draughts enter the helmet and/or when whistling sounds are noted?
After a longer period of use, the visor may need to be adjusted. To be sure that the shield is adjusted to factory specifications and thus ensure optimal comfort and safety, we strongly suggest to have the adjustments carried out by an official Arai dealer.
Why shouldn’t I carry the helmet through the chin piece?
Carrying the helmet with your hand through the chin piece will dent and weaken the chin piece material and part of the cheek pad material. The better way to carry the helmet is to close the Double D-rings and use the chin strap as carrying handle, an even better way is to carry the helmet in the supplied blue or grey helmet bag.

Can I purchase Arai helmets, visors or spare parts from you direct?

I need to replace a broken/missing part on my helmet, where can I get this from?
Your official Arai dealer has parts in stock and can order all parts needed. Please check the online parts book for the correct description and part number of the part(s) you need. This will make ordering the correct part much easier. Tip: offer the exact colour or design together with your helmet model when ordering colored parts.
I have ordered spare parts from an Arai dealer, how long will backorder parts take to arrive?
Your Arai dealer should keep you updated on this, however if they don’t supply you with a date, the time scale is usually as follows; if the item goes on back order, shipment from Arai Europe usually averages 2-3 weeks, if the item has to come from the factory in Japan then this can stretch up to 2/3 months
I have a limited TT edition helmet and need spare parts, where do I go for this?
Your Arai dealer can order parts for any TT Limited Edition helmet.
I have a Ducati/ KTM Arai helmet – how can I get parts for these helmets?
Every Arai dealer can supply non-painted parts for these helmets - liners, visor mechanisms etc. but not the painted cover plates and vents. For these you need to visit a Ducati or KTM dealer as they can order them through their franchise stock.
How can I prevent fraying of the chins trap?
The cause of fraying of the chin strap is either that the strap rubs against Velcro (-like) material or against a heavy beard. See to it that the strap is isolated from Velcro material and use a balaclava or other insulation from a heavy beard.
The red button is missing from the chin strap?
This may be caused by extensive fraying. Consult your dealer to determine of this is covered by the limited warranty or is caused by fraying that could have been prevented.
How do I find out how old my helmet is?
There are several ways to determine the production date of the helmet:
1. By the production code engraved on the chinstrap D-ring. The code offers a capital letter followed by one or two figures. The capital letter represents the production year, starting with the letter A for the production year 2000. (B for 2001, C for 2002 etc.). The letter is followed by the production months. Example: O11 = year 2015, month November.

How many different sizes of outer shells are used?
Arai uses up to six different shell sizes, this gives the right size helmet for the customer’s head. The smallest shell is XXXS, size 49-50. For every two sizes, there is one specific shell size starting with XS (53-54) up to XXL (63-64). For really large heads, we manufacture the XXXL shell, which covers size 65-66. On demand even larger sizes can be custom made.
Why does Arai use so many outer shell and interior sizes?
Arai takes a different approach to shells than many other manufacturers. Instead of one-shape-for-all, Arai offers you different interior fit shapes to choose from. Arai believes helmet fit and weight balance is critical to both the performance and the enjoyment of a helmet. Arai also believes the rider benefits of a better, more comfortable fit result in a helmet you can wear longer – longer rides, longer years – without fatigue or “pressure points”. A better fit can also help reduce wind noise because it seals better, conforming more your head shape. It allows for a better chance of buying a helmet that’s the right size for your head – instead of one that’s too large – because in the search for comfort we might be tempted to buy a size that’s too large in order to get a “one-shape-for-all” helmet to feel comfortable. And a too-large helmet is one of the major contributors to wind noise, buffeting, and in the extreme, a helmet that moves around on your head.
How do I know when my helmet is past its best?
Arai helmets are handmade to the highest possible standard, and although after many years the outside shell can look as good as new, it’s the EPS polystyrene liner that loses its ability to absorb impact over time. Arai recommend replacing your helmet 7 years after date of manufacture and 5 years after date of purchase to maintain the maximum levels of protection. The EPS liner is effectively the shock absorber of your helmet, absorbing the force of an impact onto the shell. This is done by the cells in the poly styrene being expanded (EPS = Expanded Polystyrene) and filled with air to absorb impacts. Over time, even when not in use, these liners lose their air pockets incrementally, after 7 years, dropping the shock absorbing ability of the liner below Arai’s safety standards. What do the ECE-2205/SNELL marks on the back of my helmet mean?
ECE-2205 is a European Community specific helmet standard a helmet has to meet in order to may be used in Europe. Helmets are put through (among others) an impact absorption test to ensure maximum health and safety standards. SNELL is a (voluntary) American test standard usually displayed on American helmets together with the in America obligatory DOT mark and is regarded as much more stringent than ECE with among others a penetration test as part of the testing program. If your helmet has both ECE-2205 and SNELL signs on the back this means your helmet is ‘Dual Homologated’ a unique Arai feature which allows use both in Europe and US. Is there a service for testing my helmet if I have dropped it/crashed in it?
We can only assess the surface damage to the helmet and give our opinion of the usability of the helmet offered as a safety check. From our experience of racing and road accidents you are often best placed to make a decision on whether to continue using your Arai as you were wearing it at the time. Arai shells are made to be really strong so in general a drop from a low height is usually fine depending on the surface of course. The part of the helmet you can’t see is the EPS polystyrene liner however; this absorbs energy during an impact, and as this is not removable there is no 100% sure way of telling if the helmet has been damaged internally. If in any doubt buy a new helmet!
I have read that Arai have different shell shapes to suit different head shapes. How do I know which helmet will suit my head?
The fit of each helmet model will vary slightly depending on its function and use. The sport/touring helmet Quantum ST for instance offers the intermediate oval fit, the Quantum ST PRO the long oval fit. The oval shape offers more room around the chin area. The RX-7V is a smaller race designed shell that will be a more focused race fit. The very best way to tell if a helmet suits you is to try it on and get the opinion of the dealer. Arai helmets can be custom fit to suit your head so trying on at an official Arai dealer ensures the best fit possible.
How does the Pinlock visor functions?
The Pinlock inner visor is mounted under tension between the two already present anchor points at the inside of the original Arai visor. A silicone bead at the edge prevents trapping of moist air between the inner visor and the Arai visor. The specially prepared material is able to absorb incredible amount of moisture, preventing very effectively misting or fogging of the visor. The Pinlock visor may be changed easily for cleaning and has a very long life span. Together with the ventilation ducts, breath guard (on specific models) and the special anti-fog position of the visor, misting of the visor is a problem of the past.
What’s the difference between the different interior shapes?
It comes down to a basic fact: the shape of the head – the relationship between length and width – are as important as head size in determining the right helmet for you a helmet:
Arai’s motocross and off-road helmets – the VX Pro series – as well as our open-face helmet lines – the SZ Series – do not share the multiple-fit packages. These are built on a single-fit package that runs in the middle of the shape range. This is because Arai has had very little problem fitting customers choosing these products, within the single-fit package.
How are fit and comfort related?
Of all its advancements, innovations and features that have received critical praise, the one singled out most often is Arai’s comfort. On its own, comfort seems a simple thing. Simple to achieve, simple to appreciate. In truth, few things are more involved, more complex or inter-related than the search for, and achievement of, comfort in an enclosed, close-fitting motorcycle helmet. And fit, along with such elements as weight, shell materials and shape, balance, comfort foam type, density and placement, plays a major role.
Why is a perfect fit so important?
The simple truth is that a better-fitting helmet is not only more comfortable, but protects better. That’s why Arai leads the industry in developing new ways to provide every rider with a helmet that feels as though it was created just for him. With more available interior shapes, and an extensive range of interior liners and removable cheek pads, your Arai helmet can be customized to deliver a bespoke fit.
What is the R 75 Shape?
We couldn’t find any protection standard out there that met with our stringent requirements, so we created our own: R75. Each hand-built Arai helmet incorporates a continuous curve radius of at least 75mm, making our shells rounder, smoother and stronger. A rounder, smoother shell means better dispersal of kinetic energy as well as minimizing the potential for the helmet to catch on rough surfaces. Ask your dealer to show you the difference using his R75 gauge on the Arai helmet of your choice, and compare it to anyone else’s.
Should I try a new model for size, even if I already wear an Arai?
Things like the evolution of design technology, the changes in homologation standards, and Arai’s own changes and advancements over the years can result in the model and size you’ve “always worn” feeling differently in its current version. So, for example, if you’ve always worn a RX-7 GP series Medium, be sure to try the latest RX-7V version in Medium, even try on a different size. You’ll be happier with the result, and will get the full benefit of your Arai.
I have had my helmet for a few weeks/months and its feels a little loose/tight, can I change the padding to make it more comfortable/change the size?
The crown pad and cheek pads are removable in most Arai helmets in order to custom fit the helmet to your head. Changing a helmet from one size to another, for example changing a medium shell to fit like a large, depends on the helmet itself. Please note you can only change between sizes where the shell size is the same.
Why do Arai use a 'Double D' ring fastener?
The ‘Double D’ ring is at the moment the safest way to fasten a helmet. Other fasteners may be damaged easily or the build-up of dirt inside may influence the functioning of the device. Don’t forget that grand prix racers are obliged to use a similar system as the ‘Double D’ ring for racing use!
How much UV protection do the Arai visors provide?
The material we use in our visors filters 99% of UV light.
Is painting of the helmet and use of decals (stickers) allowed?
Painting of an Arai helmet is allowed (check the instructions in your manual), But before painting remove all plastic (polycarbonate) parts. DO NOT remove any (trim) rubbers and cover the complete inside of the helmet to avoid the aggressive fumes will damage the inner part of the helmet. Self-adhesive decals (‘stickers’) may be used on the helmet, they don’t have any influence on the material. Do Not remove the inner lining, chinstrap nor trim rubbers at all circumstances!
Are there differences between helmets for motorcycle and car race use?
Yes! The shield system is different (and lacks the streamlined ‘holders’ of the motorcycle models) and the material of the shield thicker due to regulations. The visor opening is (much) smaller for some models, while the shape of the outer shell differs. Arai car race helmets are approved with the worldwide SNELL and where demanded FIA approval, due the fact that these helmets are intended for racing us only. Motorcycle helmets are developed also for normal street use, but they are in fact the same helmets as used by the racers in the various racing disciplines (road racing, motocross etc.). Never use a car racing helmet for motorcycle use.
Is it true that MotoGP and SBK racers wear the same helmets I can buy?
Yes. Every Arai helmet is made to the same standard. In fact, Arai’s most famous racing champions wear the exact same Arai helmet you can buy. Really. No special, trick, one-off, racer-only models whose only resemblance to the one you buy is the paint scheme. The same helmet. How many other helmet companies can say that – and back it up? What does that tell you about Arai and its standards? In the words of Mr. M. Arai, the president and son of the founder: “Arai has only one standard. All Arai helmets are made the same, whether for a world racing champion or a street or dirt rider. How can you say one person’s head is worth more than another’s?”
Is Arai really still a family business?
Yes. Arai is a still a family company, driven by the same family, with the same mission, through three generations – three generations of riders. We see riders wearing our helmets, and we hope they know we made their helmets to the best of our ability, to protect and make them feel comfortable no matter how far or how long they ride. We build your helmet by hand. We each have a specific job, yet all of us know every step that goes into building it. That is how we learn there are no minor parts to an Arai helmet, and there are no minor jobs here. We build each Arai helmet as if we’re creating it for one of our own, a brother, a father, a husband, a sister. That is what makes every one of us Arai.
Why does Arai mentions ‘’real world’’ circumstances?
At Arai, safety standards like Snell or ECE are our baseline, not our goal. Standards create minimum criteria, but, while many helmet makers design their helmets to meet those minimums, “good enough” has never been good enough around here. Our standards are made for the real world, the world of distracted drivers, unpredictable situations, sharp angles – things that don't move when you hit them. A world you can’t duplicate in a controlled, predictable testing laboratory environment.
Why are Arai helmets handmade?
At Arai, we are not opposed to technology when it improves the quality of our product. Our face openings, for example, are cut by a laser-wielding robot. And our paint shop uses the most advanced application techniques available. But the heart of every Arai helmet is a shell crafted by a single person, slowly and carefully, by hand. Should I use a secondhand helmet?
When you do not know the origins or history of helmet do not use it as you do not know if the helmet was involved in an impact that may leave it useless.

Who is responsible for the warranty/returns on my helmet?
The dealer or seller you purchased your items from is responsible for the warranty/returns. If you buy goods from a dealer and they are not of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, or don’t match their description you are entitled to return the item to the dealer you purchased them from also when the helmets I bought in another country or through the Internet.
I purchased my goods from another country, how do I claim warranty?
You will need to contact the dealer you purchased the helmet from.
How long runs the limited warranty on my Arai?
The limited warranty runs 7 years from date of manufacture, and 5 years from date of purchase.
I received my helmet as a gift, can I claim warranty?
Yes, as long as you have the original proof of purchase, invoice or warranty card.
I purchased my helmet second hand, can my warranty be transferred?
If you purchase a helmet from a private individual, for example through an online auction site or advert in a paper and you have no proof of purchase, invoice or warranty card, you would not be entitled to transfer the warranty.

Helmets from other markets may not be designed to meet ECE 22-05 specifications, and interior shapes may not be designed for the European, African and Middle-East markets and may be very uncomfortable.
